Free time in Liptov region
The surrounging mountains offer a rich selection of marked trails for hikers and cycling paths in summer. The reservoir at Liptovská Mara likewise offers a wide choice of water sports – yachting, surfing, and fishing. All year round attractions are the aquaparks of Besenova, Thermalne srdce Liptova and Tatralandia in Liptovský Mikuláš. The largest accessible cave coplex in central Europe can be found in Demänovská dolina. Liptov in winter offers skiers excellently serviced slopes with artificial snow: Jasná, Malino Brdo, Donovaly, Zuberec as well as in samller local centres. Liptov is also interesting for its historical monuments the Celtic hilltop settlement on Havránok, the castle ruins in Likava, Starhrad and Liptovský Hrádok, the 13th century churches in Matioašovce, Michal as well as in other villages, the wooden evangelical church in Svätý Kríž, the list goes on.
The most important sites of village architecture are the villages of Vlkolínec, which has been added to the UNESCO list of cultural heritage and the skanzen site in the village of Pribylina.
In Liptovský Mikuláš and Ružomberok there is a wide choice of galleries, museums and studios showing the Works of the most important Slovak artists.
